Or maybe that’s women?…. Well, in the Japanese folklore story of Kiyohime, the daughter of a manor official, they are essentially one in the same. The folk tale sees us follow our protagonist Anchin – a humble buddhist monk on a pilgrimage to the Kumano shrine in the southern side of the Kii Province. But what appears to be a simple journey turns deadly, for when Kiyohime, the regal daughter of a steward sets her sights on him, she is not prepared to take no for answer. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, the old adage tells us, and perhaps in this case, it is true.
